Ramadan Selections 1447H- Lesson 18: The essence of Islam

In the Name of Allah, The Most Gracious, Most Merciful

The essence of Islam:

Dear brothers, the Prophet PBUH said:

((Desisting from one speck of sinful deeds is better than performing 80 pilgrimages after the obligatory pilgrimages. ))

[ Mentioned in the Islamic tradition ]

When you believe in the above Hadith you realize that the essence of Islam lies in refraining from committing sins and is manifested in serving people.

(While in I'tikaf, Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased by him, noticed a man appearing sad and distressed. Upon asking him for the reason of his distress by Ibn Abbas, the man disclosed that he owed a debt to someone else and was unable to pay it. Ibn Abbas offered to intervene on the man's behalf and immediately left the masjid to assist him. When reminded of his I'tikaf, Ibn Abbas explained, "Not at all, but I heard the one who lies in this grave [saying this his eyes became filled with tears], saying, "The one who moves to fulfill any need of his brother, and makes effort for it, will find it better than fasting for a whole month and performing I'tikaf in this masjid of mine.")

Accordingly, the essence of Islam lies in refraining from committing sins.

(( Desisting from one speck of sinful deeds is better than performing 80 pilgrimages after the obligatory pilgrimages. ))

Also, the essence of Islam is reflected in performing good deeds:

(( The one who moves to fulfill any need of his brother, and makes effort for it, will find it better than fasting for a whole month and performing I'tikaf in this masjid of mine.  ))

(( All people are servants of Allah, and the closest to Him is the best among them to mankind. ))

[ Abu Ya'la and Al-Bazzar by the authority of Anas bin Malik ]
