In the Name of Allah, The Most Gracious, Most Merciful
When a Muslim fasts the month of Ramadan, he maintains a personal status, level and rank in the Sight of Allah. A Muslim might move from sinning to obeying Allah, which is good.
Another Muslim might improve through Siyaam (fasting) his obedience, turning it from insincere obedience into sincere one, which is a better level.
A third Muslim might turn through Siyaam from being a mere servant into a knowledgeable worshipper, which is a higher level.
A fourth Muslim might move through Siyaam from the status of being a Muslim to the status of being a believer.
A fifth Muslim might move through Siyaam from the status of being a believer to the status of being pious.
A sixth Muslim might move through Siyaam from the status of piety to the status of Ihsan (excellence and perfection).
In other words, Siyaam is an annual quality leap for the believer.
