Scientific topics from sermons- Lesson (379): Stability on Earth

In the Name of Allah, The Most Gracious, Most Merciful

In Allah’s Book, the Holy Quran, there is a Verse that goes,

“Is not He (Allah) Who has made the Earth as a stable abode?!”

[An-Naml; 61]

In his book of Quranic interpretation (3/371), Ibn Katheer says: “Is not Allah Who has made the Earth a stable abode that does not shake or quake under those who live on its surface?! If it shook or quaked, life on its surface would be unbearable. But due to Allah’s Infinite Divine Grace and Mercy, He has made it a stable abode that does not shake or heave underneath those who live on it. To this effect, Allah, All-Mighty, Most Gracious, says,

“It is Allah, Who has made the Earth for you a stable abode and the heaven as a canopy.”

He, Most Gracious, has also made rivers with fresh water run all over its surface: small and big rivers, rivers that run eastwards, westwards, northwards and southwards, all for the benefit of His slaves, mankind, in their different countries and homelands, for He, Most Merciful, has caused them to spread everywhere on the Earth’s surface and provided them with sustenance that they need to survive.”
Now, the question is: Who has made the Earth a stable abode on which buildings can be firmly established?! Who has made it a resting place suitable for human life although it moves at a speed of 30 km/second?! If the Earth were made to shake, no single building could possibly exist on its surface. O Allah! We beseech You to show us Your Favors by making them abundant and not by making them scarce. Allah, All-Mighty, says,

“And you see the mountains and think that they are motionless, but they are moving as clouds are.”

[An-Naml; 88]

Mountains seem to be motionless, but they are in constant motion, just like clouds, because they move with the Earth’s movement round the Sun.

Evidence on the stability on earth:

A few years ago, coalition forces bombarded one of the Balkan countries for six months by the most developed weapons, by the Phantom warplanes, by the laser rays, by computers, by satellites, day and night, 400 aircraft take-offs per day, and most accurate bombarding for six months, which cost nearly 300,000 million Dollars.
All the above-mentioned destruction, which was caused by six-month bombardment with the most developed weapons and which cost fabulous amounts of money, can be done by a 45-second earthquake:

“Verily! The Power of your Lord is indeed Great!”

[Al- Burouj; 12]

 Allah, All-High, says,

“Is not He (Allah) Who has made the Earth as a stable abode?!”.

In fact, without Allah’s Divine Care and Help we, human beings, are absolutely helpless! If the Earth were made to quake at 8 degrees on the Richter Scale, all buildings on the Earth would be devastated and people would be buried, groaning under debris with no one to hear or care.
 Allah, All-Mighty, says,

“Say: ‘It is He Who is Able to send torment on you from above you (i.e. thunderbolts and missiles), or from under your feet (i.e. earthquakes and mines), or to cover you with confusion in party strife and make you taste the violence of one another (i.e. civil wars).”

[Al- An'aam; 65]

He, Glory to Him, also says,

“And Allah puts forward the parable of a township that dwelt secure and well-content: its provision coming to it in abundance from everywhere, but it denied the Favors of Allah, so Allah made it taste extreme hunger and fear because of that which they used to do.”

[An- Nahl; 112]

Grvity system:

The second meaning of Allah’s Words

“Is not He (Allah) Who has made the Earth as a stable abode?!”

is: Who created the force of gravity whereby all things are attracted to the Earth?! It is Allah, All-Mighty, Most Gracious! Weightlessness makes human life unbearable! Without gravity nothing would remain on the Earth’s surface. Who created the force of gravity?! It is Allah, All-Mighty, Most Gracious! This is the second meaning of Allah’s Words

“Is not He (Allah) Who has made the Earth as a stable abode?!”.

The third meaning is: O human being! Who has made in the Earth all the things that you need?! Can you settle in a place with no water?! Definitely not! You can settle only where there is water and dwelling. Therefore, it is Allah, Most Merciful, Who has enabled mankind to settle on the Earth’s surface by making all the things that they need available on it. Scientists say that on the Earth there are 285,000 different kinds of food substances that man eats.

Role of Afflictions:

Allah’s Signs are scattered everywhere. Happy are those who learn from the experiences of other fellow humans; but miserable are those who learn from their own experiences. Furthermore, if people do not show adequate respect and obedience to Allah and His Religion, they become insignificant to Him and thus deserve His Wrath and Punishment. To this effect, Allah, All-Mighty, says,

“And verily, We shall make them taste the near torment (i.e. torment in the life of this world: disasters, calamities, wars, …etc.) prior to the supreme torment (in the Hereafter), in order that they may repent and return.”

[Al- Sajdah; 21]

He, Glory to Him, also says,

“Evil has appeared on land and sea because of what the hands of men have earned, that He (Allah) make them taste a part of that which they have done in order that they may return (by showing adequate repentance).”

[Ar-Rum; 41]

A member of the Turkish parliament delivered a speech about the earthquake that took place in Turkey a few years ago. He said: “We have fought against Allah and His Messenger. We have fought against women’s veil. We have helped the Jews against Muslims. And we have allowed space channels to transmit their evil programs to people. Therefore, Allah, All-Mighty, has punished us.”
Beyond a shadow of doubt, Allah, All-Mighty, is Merciful to us, but if we are not merciful to ourselves, He will certainly punish us. In a Divine Hadith, He, All-Mighty, Most Gracious, says,

“If they (My slaves) repent, they deserve My Love, but if they do not repent, I am their Physician: I try them with disasters in order to purify them from sins and faults. A good deed is recompensed ten folds as good, and I even give more, and an evil deed is recompensed one fold as evil, and I even forgive. And I am more compassionate to My slave than a mother is to her child.”
