Scientific topics from sermons- lesson (20)- Speed of Earth

In the Name of Allah, The Most Gracious, Most Merciful

How many rotations does the earth have around the sun?

Dear noble brothers, I would like to mention two Ayaat among many other ones that refer to the speed of the earth. In the first Ayah, Allah the Almighty says:

(Is not He (better than your gods) Who has made the earth as a fixed abode, and has placed rivers in its midst, and has placed firm mountains therein, and has set a barrier between the two seas (of salt and sweet water). Is there any ilah (god) with Allah? Nay, but most of them know not.)

 [An-Naml, 61]

In the second one, Allah the Almighty says:

(Allah, it is He Who has made for you the earth as a dwelling place and the sky as a canopy, and has given you shape and made your shapes good (looking) and has provided you with good things. That is Allah, your Lord, then blessed be Allah, the Lord of the 'Alamin (mankind, jinns and all that exists).)

[Ghafir, 64]

Undoubtedly, the speed of the earth's revolution around the sun is a marvelous cosmic Sign of which a great many people are heedless and from which they have turned away. The earth turns around itself at a speed of 1600 km/h. It also turns around the sun at a speed of 30 km/sec. Hence, the earth has two kinds of movement: an axial rotation and a revolution around the Sun. Nevertheless, it remains perfectly stable and comfortable. If it were to shake, even slightly, all buildings thereon would be demolished, so who can make the earth stable? Can you, human beings, make it stable?! When the earth shook in some countries, a whole city was completely devastated. Why could you not prevent that?! Why could you not keep it stable?!

Your house, for which you pay tens of millions of Liras, what will its value be if the earth shakes and causes it to crack? Your wealth, by which you buy houses, will be completely wasted if the earth shakes and causes them to crack. What can you do then?!

(And you will see the mountains and think them solid, but they shall pass away as the passing away of the clouds. The Work of Allah, Who perfected all things, verily! He is Well-Acquainted with what you do.)

[An-Naml, 88]

Allah the Almighty says:

(Is not He (better than your gods) Who has made the earth as a fixed abode…)

[An-Naml, 61]

Who has made the earth constantly stable while it is revolving around itself, around the sun, with the sun and along with the whole galaxy of the Milky Way?! In this context, Allah the Almighty says:

(It is not for the sun to overtake the moon, nor does the night outstrip the day. They all float, each in an orbit.)

 [Ya-Sin, 40]

What kind of force the earth has that enables it to remain stable and firm? What could happen if such force became unstable in the outer space? If man flies a distance where gravity is zero, the life in his shuttle will be unbearable, because everything will become weightless and will scatter all around the spacecraft making man unable to catch anything. Who has made all things on the earth's surface attracted to it?! It is Allah the Almighty.

If the earth were made to increase the speed of its rotation, all things would fly off its surface. If it increased its speed 17 times, all things would also fly off its surface. If you put a glass of water on a table, what keeps it stable on the surface of the table? It is the force of gravity, by which all things on the earth's surface are attracted to its center.

Who has made seas of the southern hemisphere attracted to the earth? If someone goes to the southern hemisphere, to Australia and Argentina for example, what does he see? Everything is normal: land is still land and the sky is still the sky. Look at Australia on the map; it is in the southern hemisphere. So, what is the sky? It is the side of the universe that is opposite the earth's center, whether one goes to the northern or southern hemispheres.

(Is not He (better than your gods) Who has made the earth as a fixed abode…)

[An-Naml, 61]

Who has made the seas in both hemispheres attracted to the earth? Who has made the air attached to the earth and moving along with it? If the air were not attached to the earth, there would be devastating storms and winds destroying everything on the earth's surface, but the atmosphere is attached to the Earth!

(Is not He (better than your gods) Who has made the earth as a fixed abode…)

[An-Naml, 61]

If you put something on the ground, it remains in its place, and it does not move away. It is the force of gravity that keeps all things on the earth's surface attracted to it. Yes, indeed! It is the Infinite Divine Power of Allah the Almighty Who created the force of gravity!

Dear noble brothers, we have mentioned only two Ayaat in the Noble Quran as examples of the Divine Signs in the universe. Allah the Almighty says in the first Ayah I have chosen for this topic:

(Is not He (better than your gods) Who has made the earth as a fixed abode, and has placed rivers in its midst, and has placed firm mountains therein, and has set a barrier between the two seas (of salt and sweet water). Is there any ilah (god) with Allah? Nay, but most of them know not.)

 [An-Naml, 61]

The second Ayah is:

(Allah, it is He Who has made for you the earth as a dwelling place and the sky as a canopy, and has given you shape and made your shapes good (looking) and has provided you with good things. That is Allah, your Lord, then blessed be Allah, the Lord of the 'Alamin (mankind, jinns and all that exists).)

[Ghafir, 64]

If you go to the moon, your weight decreases by 1/6. In other words, if you weigh 60 kg's on the earth's surface, you will weigh only 10 kg's on the moon. This is the force of gravity.

Dear believing brothers, in the two above Ayaat, Allah the Almighty  desires to call our attention to this cosmic fact, so happy is he who contemplates them.

Reflecting on Allah's creations is an act of worship:

Dear brothers, contemplation for one hour is better than worship for sixty years. Allah the Almighty says:

(Verily! We have sent it (this Qur'an) down in the night of Al-Qadr (Decree)* And what will make you know what the night of Al-Qadr (Decree) is?* The night of Al-Qadr (Decree) is better than a thousand months (i.e. worshipping Allah in that night is better than worshipping Him a thousand months, i.e. 83 years and 4 months).)

[Al-Qadr, 1-3]

(They made not a just estimate of Allah such as is due to Him. And on the Day of Resurrection the whole of the earth will be grasped by His Hand and the heavens will be rolled up in His Right Hand. Glorified is He, and High is He above all that they associate as partners with Him!)

[Az-Zumar, 67]

(Say: "Behold all that is in the heavens and the earth,"…)

[Yunus, 101]

(And most of them believe not in Allah except that they attribute partners unto Him [i.e. they are Mushrikun -polytheists -].)

[Yusuf; 106]
