First Sermon
Dear believing brothers, Allah says in Surah Al-Israa:
﴾23. And your Lord has decreed that you worship none but Him. And that you be dutiful to your parents. If one of them or both of them attain old age in your life, say not to them a word of disrespect, nor shout at them but address them in terms of honour.24. And lower unto them the wing of submission and humility through mercy, and say: "My Lord! Bestow on them Your Mercy as they did bring me up when I was small." ﴿
“Your Lord has decreed” means that Allah has given an order. What is this order? That you worship none but Him. Allah says:
﴾56. And I (Allah) created not the jinns and humans except they should worship Me (Alone). ﴿
Ali narrated that the prophet peace be upon him said:
(( No creature should be obeyed if he orders a disobedience to Allah Almighty))
No one should be worshiped but Allah. He alone deserves to be worshiped. There is no god but Allah: this means that no one has right to be worshiped but Allah. No one controls the universe but Allah. Allah says:
﴾And to Him return all affairs (for decision). So worship Him (O Muhammad) and put your trust in Him (123). ﴿
Why did He order you to worship Him alone? Because all affairs return to Him, the enemy that you fear is under His control, your sustenance that you seek is in His Hand, your health that you care for is in His Hand, everyone around you are under His control.
Worship is preceded with knowledge and followed with happiness. Allah says:
﴾And your Lord has decreed that you worship none but Him﴿
And He says:
﴾And We did not send any Messenger before you (O Muhammad) but We inspired him (saying): La ilaha illa Ana [none has the right to be worshipped but I (Allah)], so worship Me (Alone and none else)." (25) ﴿
It is the call of all prophets, the cause of creation, and the first order on earth.
﴾And your Lord has decreed that you worship none but Him﴿
However, the surprising thing is that doing good to parents is combined with monotheism. How did Allah combine doing good to parents with worship of Allah? There is no doubt that doing good to parents is a great work that has a high rank similar to that of worship. Allah is the One who created you and gave you everything deserves to be worshiped, and this woman who took care of you, and raised you up when you were in need of her deserves to do good to her. Allah says:
﴾23. And your Lord has decreed that you worship none but Him. And that you be dutiful to your parents﴿
The verb “Ahsana”/ “to do good” is combined with “to”/”ila”. We say: I did good to you. But in the verse it comes with “baa”, why is that? Some interpreters say that this “baa” means being close. Doing good to parents must come from you “personally”, you can’t do good to them through someone. Allah says:
﴾23. And your Lord has decreed that you worship none but Him. And that you be dutiful to your parents﴿
If you worship Allah, you thank for the blessing of being created, sustained and for having Allah as you Lord. If you do good to your parents you give them their right and thank them for their upbringing to you and taking care of you when you were in need to them.
Dear honorable brother, Allah says:
﴾23. And your Lord has decreed that you worship none but Him. And that you be dutiful to your parents﴿
The parents might be young and have a lot of knowledge and wisdom, so they are cute , wise, and they can know what to say and what not to say. Doing good to such parents is simple and easy but Allah mentions two difficult cases:
﴾If one of them or both of them attain old age in your life﴿
If your father or mother is with you at your home, they have nobody to help them but, no other house to live in, at your home, and they are old. Their demands might be difficult, they might interfere in your affairs, they might make you tired , they might interfere between you and your wife, so Allah says:
If one of them or both of them attain old age in your life
In this hard situation, it is difficult to be good with them, in this case particularly, Allah says:
((If one of them or both of them attain old age in your life, say not to them a word of disrespect))
In Arabic, the least word is “of”, if there were a less word, Allah would have mentioned it.
((Say not to them a word of disrespect, nor shout at them but address them in terms of honour.))
The same applied for closing the word in a tough way, staring at them harshly, being bored of them, turning your face away form them carelessly. Allah says:
((If one of them or both of them attain old age in your life, say not to them a word of disrespect, nor shout at them but address them in terms of honour.))
Allah Almighty, the creator of heavens and earth orders you to say good saying to them. What do you think or a rich person whose mother sues him asking that he spend on her. How could a mother be in need to sue her son in order that she live.
Dear believing bsh3er, Allah says:
﴾23. And your Lord has decreed that you worship none but Him. And that you be dutiful to your parents. If one of them or both of them attain old age in your life, say not to them a word of disrespect, nor shout at them but address them in terms of honour.24. And lower unto them the wing of submission and humility through mercy ﴿
Lower unto them the wing of submission and humility , even if your mother is illiterate and you have the highest scientific degree, if she is naive and you are the most intelligent, if you have a high rank. He who feels ashamed of his father is not a believer. The one who ignores his parents in the presence of people is not a believer. Allah says:
﴾24. And lower unto them the wing of submission and humility through mercy, and say: "My Lord! Bestow on them Your Mercy as they did bring me up when I was small." ﴿
Your were in need of them, now they are in need of you, so what will you do. Let he who is ungrateful to his parents do whatever he wants, he will not enter Paradise. As if being ungrateful to parents is the worst crime a man can do. The one who cares for his wife and forgets his mother, who gets angry if his wife gets angry but doesn’t get angry if his mother gets angry, is not a believer.
Endear yourself to your parents, serve them yourself, sit with them, listen to them, visit them often, take them for a picnic, don’t eat delicious food without them, remember when you were a child and unable to bring your food, dirnk, or clothes, and you were in their hearts. Allah says:
﴾24. And lower unto them the wing of submission and humility through mercy, and say: "My Lord! Bestow on them Your Mercy as they did bring me up when I was small." ﴿
Some interpreters said that when Allah decreed that Noah’s son would be drowned, he sent a huge wave that prophet Noah could not see his son drowning. Allah Almighty says:
﴾And a wave came in between them, so he (the son) was among the drowned. ﴿
This was out of mercy for the father, because his heart could not stand this.
Dear believing brother: the Prophet peace be upon him said:
((Be good and dutiful to your mother and father, sister and brother, then your kin the closer ones then the farther ones))
It is a prophetic order. A man asked the prophets: who are the people who most deserve my good company? He said: “Your mother ….. your father, then your kin”,. And Abu Ayyoub said: I heard the prophet of Allah peace be upon him saying:
(( He who separates a mother and her children, Allah will separate him and his beloved people in the Doomsday))
When a mother dies, Allah says to her son: “the one for whom I honored you is dead so do good deeds that I would honor you for yourself. Abu Asaid Malek bin Rabiaa’ Al-Saidi said: while we were with the prophet peace be upon him, a man from bani Salama came to him and said:
(( O Allah’s Apostle, is there something I can do to be dutiful to my parents after their death? He said: Yes, you can supplicate to Allah for them, ask Allah to forgive them, fulfill their promises after them, being good to kin that they used to be good to, and honor their friends))
Dear bsh3er, the believer has duties towards his parents after their death. He should ask Allah to allow them to Paradise, supplicate Allah for them, ask Allah to forgive them, fulfill their oaths and will, to be good to their kin, and to honor their friends. The Prophet says:
(( The supplication of the mother is the fastest to be responded to. It was said: Why o Prophet of Allah? He said: she is more merciful than the father.))
Abu Said Al-Khudri narrated that a man migrated from Yemen to the prophet, so the prophet asked:
(( Do you have anyone in Yemen?. He said: my parents. So he said: Go back to them and ask for their permission, if they allow you go for Jihad or else stay with them and do good to them.))
This means that bring good to mother is equal to Jihad (fighting if the cause of Allah). Another man came to the Prophet asking him to allow him to go fighting with him. The Prophet asked: Do you have a mother? He said: Yes. He said:
((Stay close to her for Paradise is at her feet))
A third one came asking permission to migrate, but he said: I left my parents crying. The noble prophet said:
((Go back and make them laugh as you made them cry))
This is the Quran and the Sunna. The Quran says:
﴾And your Lord has decreed that you worship none but Him. And that you be dutiful to your parents﴿
And the Sunna has many hadiths showing the virtue of parents. However, these days, people don’t comply with the Quran and Sunna. Thus, it was necessary to have a day in which msh3er are honored. Had they comply with the Quran and Sunna, they would have honored their msh3er 365 days a year. As for believers, the whole year is msh3er’ days because the gates of Paradise are open to those who want to do good to their parents.
Abu Yossof, the companion and student of Abu- Hanifa, said: Abu Hnifa used to carry his mother on a she-camel to the lectures of a scholar called Omar bin Dhar. She was more convinced of his knowledge that of her son’s. Sometimes she sent him to ask about something, so he went to ask him and tell her. Bin Dhar was surprised and sometimes he asked him: How do you ask me while you are our teacher and Imam? He said: My mother ordered me to do so. So he asked him in a low voice: what shall I answer. Then he raised his voice and tell him the answer. So that she was content with his answer not with her son’s answer. Sometimes, she didn’t like the answer, so he took her to Zaraa Al-Qassas who also asked him about the answer until she is satisfied not knowing that Abu- Hanifaa answered her in both times. This means that being good to mother is the duty of every believer, whether she is educated or not, whether she appreciated you or not. She is a mother and this is enough. Do your duty and ask Allah for your reward. Don’t worry about her behavior. Allah the Almighty asks you to be good and dutiful to her.
Dear brother, think of your acts and deeds and weigh them before Allah accounts you, and know that death has passed us us to sh3er, and it will pass sh3er to come to us. The wise is the one who accuses himself and work for what comes after death, and the helpless is the one who follows his desires and make wishes.
Praise be to Allah
Second Khutba:
As we are talking about mother, I used to talk in each sermon about a proof of Allah’s Greatness, so I will talk about mother’s milk.
Scholars say that there is a huge gap between breast feeding and bottle feeding. They are so different. It is so hard to imitate the quality of breast milk. Breast feeding is the safest way to protect the baby from illnesses and infections. Mother’s milk contains intestinal and respiratory anti-inflammatory materials, materials that prevent the germs from sticking to the mucous membrane of the intestines, materials that dissolve germs, and leukocytes with antibiotics preventing tetanus, dysentery, and polio. This means that immunity of the mother is in her breast milk, so when she breastfeeds her baby, he gets the vaccines he has and acquires immunity, and this ensures his health and immunity against dangerous illnesses. Some studies showed that baby deaths is four times less among breastfed babies than among bottle-fed babies. That’s why all factories of baby milk have to write on the container of milk: we advise you to breast feed your babies.
Moreover, breastfeeding keeps the mother from breast cancer. In addition, breast milk is digested in an hour and a half, while bottle milk needs three hours to be digested. The mother doesn’t have to cool her breast milk, sterilize it, buy it, or look for it. It is always ready, with suitable temperature. It is warm in winter, cool in summer, and its temperature doesn’t change during feeding. No milk producer can change milk according to the baby’s growth, while breast milk changes everyday to be suitable to the baby’s growth and his need to materials. It is sterilized and has no germs. It prevents malnutrition, infections and diseases. It is easy to prepare and easy to digest, especially at night, in travel. Some scientists even say that early weaning causes psychological response and behavior deviation. Allah says:
﴾233. The msh3er shall give suck to their children for two whole years, (that is) for those (parents) who desire to complete the term of suckling, ﴿
This is Allah’s planning. The child should fed from his mother’s milk. If we change this, we will get into countless problems.
