Lesson 9 – "O you who believe! Take care of your own selves, if you follow the right guidance and enjoin what is right no hurt can come to you from those who are in error."

In the Name of Allah, The Most Gracious, Most Merciful

Dear noble brothers, we are discussing a new lesson of this series about the Ayaat that start with, "O you who believe…", and today's Ayah is:

(O you who believe! Take care of your own selves. If you follow the right guidance and enjoin what is right, no hurt can come to you from those who are in error. The return of you all is to Allah, then He will inform you about (all) that which you used to do.)

[Al-Ma'idah, 105]

This Ayah might be misinterpreted:

(Qais Ibn Abi Hazem, May Allah have mercy on his soul, said: Abu Bakr stood up and praised and glorified Allah, then he said: O people, you recite this verse: "O you who believe! Take care of your ownselves. If you follow the (right) guidance..." [Al-Ma'idah 5:105], but you do not interpret it properly. I heard the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) say: "If the people see evil and do not change it, soon Allah will send His punishment upon them all.)

[Sunan Abi Dawood, by the authority of Qais Ibn Abi Hazem]

"Take care of your own selves" indicates taking care of your ownselves in the sense of getting your ownselves acquainted with Allah, forcing your ownselves to obey Allah the Almighty and striving in the Cause of Allah, and when you do so, your enemies will never hurt you:

(If you follow the right guidance and enjoin what is right, no hurt can come to you from those who are in error.)

[Al-Ma'idah, 105]

The one who is heedless and misguided will never get to you even if he is so powerful, because you are armed with faith, and indeed faith is power:

(If you help (in the cause of) Allah, He will help you)

[Al-Anfal, 10]
