Islamic Education- Ways of Access and Signs of Acceptence- Lesson (26-70): Heedlessness contradicts the value of time

In the Name of Allah, The Most Gracious, Most Merciful

Time is either invested or wasted:

Dear brother, we are still talking about the topic “the time” which is one of the most crucial topics, because man is but time and few days, and every day that passes, takes away part of man with it.
  The first fact:
Time, which defines you, is your capital in life and the most valuable thing you own, so either you waste it or you can invest., The majority of people on earth do spend their entire time eating, drinking and enjoying life’s pleasures and at the end they are taken aback by a health problem which might bring man’s demise or by sudden death without any introductions.
There are uncountable stories about the sudden death, for some live people became people of graves in a matter of seconds. Thus wasting time is a very easy thing to do.

((…while the deeds of the Fire are easy to find in the lowlands))

[Ishaq Bin Rahaweh by Abdullah Ibn Abbas]

The majority of people spend their time relaxing and they have no concerns or limitations of any kind, this situation reflects wasting time. On the other hand, the time you own now can be invested by offering good deeds before it goes forever.

Man’s value in the sight of Allah accords with his good deeds:

In fact there is a very delicate point about this concept: Any good deed will accompany you to your grave and this good deed is the outcome of investing your time. It is certain that when man dies, he will leave everything behind him including his possessions, closet, bank accounts, the valuable things he owns, his house, his furniture and his office, and after his death, his family will accompany him to his grave, but they will all, including his closest family, leave him there, so what stays with him in the grave? His good deeds only:

((O Qays! There will undoubtedly be a companion with you in the grave! He will be alive when he is buried along with you while you will be dead! If he is noble, he will honor you! However, if he is vile, he will torment you. He will be with you and will be resurrected along with you!))

[Sahih Hadith by Qais Ibn Asim]

Your value in the sight of Allah accords with your good deeds, this is the first fact.
Hence, wasting time is wrong, whereas investing it is the right thing to do.
Investing time means that you use the time, which is about to pass, in offering a deed which will escort you to your grave.
You will be doing a good deed when you call people to Allah, seek knowledge, raise your children, are good to sh3er and spend your money in sponsoring an orphan, looking after a widow or feeding a poor person. Verify the paths to Allah are as many as people’s numbers.

Goodness in life comes from from spreadign knowledge and listening to it:

The second thing: The prophet PBUH said in one of his sermons:

“O people, there is no goodness in life but to a speaking knowledgeable man or a prudent listener”

((The people can be divided into two groups: the scholars, the seekers of knowledge, and both are rewarded equally, while there is no goodness in the rest of people))

[Tabarani by Abdullah Ibn Mas’ood]

“O people, there is no goodness in life but to a speaking knowledgeable man or a prudent listener! O people, you are in time of Hudnah”

During the school year it is a time of Hudnah (truce), for all students seem to be the same, and you can’t tell who is lazy and who is diligent, but after the exams, they will be distinguished and some of them will be very successful, sh3er will be average and a group of them will flunk their year holding the shame of failure:

“O people, you are in time of Hudnah”

Much in the same line, all people in worldly life live in houses, eat, drink, drive a car, go to picnics, meet with people and get their daughters married, and they will not be distinguished until after death:

﴾ (It will be said): "And O you Al-Mujrimun (criminals, polytheists, sinners, disbelievers in the Islamic Monotheism, wicked evil ones, etc.)! Get you apart this Day (from the believers). ﴿

[Ya-Sin, 59]

On The Day of Judgment people will be grouped as Muslims and criminals, and as believers and disbelievers:

“O People! You are in a period of Hudnah and the journey which you are upon is a fast moving one, and surely you see how night and the day make everything old which is new and how they make everything which is far away, near (to you) and how (these two) bring forth all the promises (which have been kept). Miqdad said to him, O Prophet of Allah, and what is Al-Hudnah? So he (blessings of Allah be upon him and his family) replied, It is the abode of tests and migration.”

The Worldly life is the abode of trials then death finishes everything, for it finishes the opulence of the rich who leaves behind him hefty wealth, it finishes the power of the powerful and even though he might be a tyrant who leaves people’s knees shaking, yet after he dies he will become old news, it finishes the weakness of the weak, the beauty of the good looking, the ugliness of the ugly, the intelligence of the clever and simplemindedness of the simpleminded:

“O People! You are in a period of Hudnah … what is Al-Hudnah? So he (blessings of Allah be upon him and his family) replied, It is the abode of tests and migration. So then when the (treacherous) events descend upon you like a segment of the dark night”

This era is full of misconceptions, doubts, deviated notions and stultifying the religion:

“So then when the (treacherous) events descend upon you like a segment of the dark night, then I advise you to (hold onto) the Quran since it (the Quran) is an intermediary whose intercession is accepted, and it is the one which speaks the truth and also confirms and testifies to sh3er (and the truth which they speak) and whoever places the Quran in front of him, it (the Quran) will lead him to Paradise and the person who tosses the Quran behind him, it will push him to Hell. It is the best guide to the most exalted path, whoever speaks out with the Quran is honest, whoever works according to the Quran is rewarded, and whoever uses it to judge between people is just. The superiority of the Qur’an over the rest of words, is like the superiority of Allah over His creations.”

Someone saw Assiddeeq (Abu Bakr) in his dream, and he asked him to give him a piece of advice. Assiddeeq said: “Be the man of your time”.
A scholar interpreted this dream as follows: at dawn you are in the Masjid to offer Fajr Salah, on Friday you offer Friday prayer, in the middle of the day you are at work and at night you are in your house, so every time has its own sort of worship and this is the meaning of “Be the man of your time”.

One of time qualities is that it can fly quickly or last long:

Dear brother, one of the qualities of time is that it can fly or last long, but actually it doesn’t change and time is time and the hour is still 60 minutes all over the world, however, time is very long for the one in agony:

When you are far away my nights become too long
Whereas nights used to fly when you were close

Some said: a minute of agony is like an hour, and an hour of ecstasy is like a minute.

When we were university students, the three hours of the exam used to fly. I used to write the answers of some questions and an hour would have passed, then two hours and I don’t know how the three hours of the exam flew.
When I became a teacher at the university, I started to monitor students during tests, and by Allah the three hours of the exam were like 3 years, and no matter how often I looked at my watch, it seemed like time didn’t pass, and the minute I thought that half an hour has passed, it would be only a few minutes., Believe me the hardest task for teachers is to monitor students during exams, for these three hours are like three years because the teacher is doing nothing while the student is busy with his exam.
Hence, time might prolong and might become short.

Time is light for believers and heavy for disbelievers:

What is the practical application of that concept? Time is very light on the believer and is very heavy on the disbeliever, Allah says:

﴾ The Fire; they are exposed to it, morning and afternoon, and on the Day when the Hour will be established (it will be said to the angels): "Cause Fir'aun's (Pharaoh) people to enter the severest torment!"﴿

[Ghafir, 46]

We multiply 6000 years by 365 and we multiply the result by 2, this is how long they are exposed to Fire:

﴾ morning and afternoon, ﴿

And a lot more is awaiting.
This is why the grave could be a hole of hellfire’s holes, or a garden of paradise’s gardens. There is a glad tiding though:

((Abdullah bin Busr Al-Aslami (May Allah be pleased with him) said: Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said, "The best of people is one whose life is long and his conduct is good".))

[Tirmizi by Abdullah Bin Busr]

A scholar in Damascus started teaching when he was only 18 years old. He spent 80 years in teaching and he died at the age of 98.
He used to see a young man in the street and say to him: “O son, you were my student, so was your father and your grandfather”.
He kept in shape even in his old age, his sight was good, so as his hearing, he had all his teeth in his mouth and when people asked him: How come you kept your health for that long? He used to answer:: “O son, we kept our senses from sinning when we were young, and as a result Allah bestowed us with good health in our old age, verify whoever leads a pious life, will live a healthy one.
I visited the father of my friend once, and he said to me: “I am 96 years old, and I had some tests done yesterday and the results were all normal”, then he added: “By Allah I have never taken one penny from Haram (unlawful) source all my life, and never knew the other Haram (having affairs with women).”

Time passes quickly:

Dear brother, there is another quality related to time, and it is about how quickly time passes.
Each one of us has his own lifetime, and we always wonder: How fast our life passed?
It passes as the twinkling of an eye, as the passing of the clouds and as the travelling of the wind.
Time passes very quickly whether you were rejoicing life or were in hardship and sadness.
  Hence, time never goes backward.
  Allah says:

﴾ And on the Day when He shall gather (resurrect) them together, (it will be) as if they had not stayed (in the life of this world and graves, etc.) but an hour of a day. ﴿

[Yunus, 45]

Whether man lived 83, 89 or 87 years old, it would be like an hour of a day only:

﴾ They will say: "We stayed a day or part of a day. Ask of those who keep account." ﴿

[Al-Mu’minun, 113]

Dear brother, another quality of time is that when it passes it never goes back.
Only the idiots talk about the past which is meaningless unless it is recalled to learn lessons from, but grieving and longing for the past is pointless, for whatever passes has gone, whatever is in the future is unseen and all you have got in your hands is the hour you live in the present.
  Imam Al Basri said:
“Every new day that comes upon man says to him: “O son of Adam, I am a new creation and I will witness your deeds. Hence, make the best out of me, for you will not see me ever again till the Day of Resurrection”

Two conditions under which man falls in remorse:

Whoever doesn’t know the value of time and wastes it, will know its value when it is too late.
Quran mentions two conditions under which man has much regret: the first one is at the hour of death, Allah says:

﴾ O you who believe! Let not your properties or your children divert you from the remembrance of Allah. And whosoever does that, then they are the losers. And spend (in charity) of that with which We have provided you, before death comes to one of you and he says: "My Lord! If only You would give me respite for a little while (i.e. return to the worldly life), then I should give Sadaqah (i.e. Zakat) of my wealth, and be among the righteous [i.e. perform Hajj (pilgrimage to Makkah)]. And Allah grants respite to none when his appointed time (death) comes. And Allah is All-Aware of what you do. ﴿

[Al-Munafiqun, 9-11]

This is the first condition, and the divine response is:

﴾And Allah grants respite to none when his appointed time (death) comes. And Allah is All-Aware of what you do. ﴿

The other condition is in the hereafter:

﴾and every one will be paid in full for what he did (good or evil, belief or disbelief in the life of this world)﴿

[Al-Nahl, 111]

Everyone will be paid in full, and after that the people of paradise will be admitted in paradise, and the people of fire will be admitted in hellfire, and only then, the people of hellfire will wish to come back to the worldly life (the abode of the divine assignment) in order to offer good deeds, but it will be too late for such a wish, as the time of offering deeds is over, and the time for reckoning has come. Allah says:

﴾But those who disbelieve, (in the Oneness of Allah - Islamic Monotheism) for them will be the Fire of Hell. Neither it will have a complete killing effect on them so that they die, nor shall its torment be lightened for them. Thus do We requite every disbeliever! Therein they will cry: "Our Lord! Bring us out, we shall do righteous good deeds, not (the evil deeds) that we used to do.﴿

[Fatir, 36-37]

The most pecific opinions of scholars about the word “Al-Natheer” (warner):

1- “Al-Natheer” is the prophet PBUH:

Now pay attention to the following Ayah:

﴾(Allah will reply): "Did We not give you lives long enough, so that whosoever would receive admonition, - could receive it? And the warner came to you.﴿

[Fatir, 37]

Pay attention to the word “Natheer” (warner):

﴾And the warner came to you.﴿

Al Imam Al Qurtubi, May Allah have mercy on his soul, and who happened to be a very notable interpreter of Quran, interpreted the word “Natheer” with many outstanding interpretations.

﴾ the warner﴿

The warner is the messenger of Allah (i.e. Muhammad PBUH):

﴾ O Prophet (Muhammad SAW )! Verily, We have sent you as witness, and a bearer of glad tidings, and a warner, ﴿

[Al-Ahzab, 45]

 For he said:

((Live as long as you want, for you will die. Love whomever you want, for you will leave him. Do whatever you want for you will be requited for it))

[Al Hakim by Sahl Ibn Sa’d or Abdullah Ibn Umar]

((Once a man asked the prophet PBUH: Who are the best dispensers of matters? The Prophet replied: Those who remember death more than other people and those who well prepare themselves to what is after death, those are the best dispensers of matters.))

[Al Harith by Zaid Ibn Ali]

((The signs of a prudent man are that he is uninterested in this world of deception, he strives for the eternal home in which he will dwell in, and he is prepared for death before death overtakes him; and he is ready for the Day of Resurrection))

[Mentioned in relic]

((The clever one is he who upbraids himself and works for what comes after death))

[Tirmizi by Shaddad Bin Aws]

 He who controls himself.

((…and the weak one is he who follows his desires and lives on wishful thinking))

[Tirmizi by Shaddad Bin Aws]

Hence, the prophet PBUH and all his prophetic Sunnah is the warner:

﴾ the warner﴿

2- “Al-Natheer” is the noble Quran:

  The Quran also is:

﴾ the warner﴿

 Allah says:

﴾Then as for him who will be given his Record in his right hand will say: "Take, read my Record! "Surely, I did believe that I shall meet my Account!" So he shall be in a life, well-pleasing. In a lofty Paradise, The fruits in bunches whereof will be low and near at hand. Eat and drink at ease for that which you have sent on before you in days past! But as for him who will be given his Record in his left hand, will say: "I wish that I had not been given my Record! "And that I had never known, how my Account is? "I wish, would that it had been my end (death)! "My wealth has not availed me, "My power and arguments (to defend myself) have gone from me!" Then throw him in the blazing Fire. "Then fasten him with a chain whereof the length is seventy cubits!" Verily, He used not to believe in Allah, the Most Great,﴿

[Al-Haqqa, 19-33]

Therefore, the quran is the “Natheer”, and the messenger is the “Natheer”.

3- “Al-Natheer” is the age of forty:

He also said: the age of forty is the Natheer.
Whoever reaches the age of forty, he then reached the edge of the hereafter.
It is like traveling for 10 days, but on the eighth day, you counter your plan and you book your flight back home and you buy gifts for everyone. Much in the same line, whoever reaches the age of 40 is already in the markets of the hereafter, and one more thing about the age of 40:

((Whoever reaches forty years old and his goodness doesn’t yet overcome his evil, let him prepare himself for hellfire))

[Abu Al Fath Al Azdi by Ibn Abbas]

 Forty years old, hence:

((…I hate three among people, but I hate other three more; I hate sinners, yet I hate the old age sinner more,...))

 This is but late adolescence:

﴾ the warner﴿

 The warner is the Quran.

﴾ the warner﴿

The warner is the prophet PBUH.

﴾ the warner﴿

And the warner is the age of 40.

4- “Al-Natheer” is the age of sixty:

  He also said:

﴾ the warner﴿

The warner is the age of 60 when man is closer to death than life, and this is a fact.

5- “Al-Natheer” is gray hair:

  He also said:

﴾ the warner﴿

The warner is gray hair according to the following Hadith in relic:

(( O my servant, your age increased, your back bowed, your sight became weak, and your hair became gray; so be ashamed of me because I am ashamed of you ))

Till when you are occupied with pleasure
Given you will be held responsible for all your deeds

**

You disobey Allah pretending that you love Him
This is really something Awful to be said
If you truly love Him then you should obey Him
As lovers obey that whom they love

Dear brother, this is the warner:

﴾ the warner﴿

﴾ (Allah will reply): "Did We not give you lives long enough, so that whosoever would receive admonition, - could receive it? And the warner came to you. ﴿

[Fatir, 37]

6- “Al-Natheer” is the calamities:

  Now:

﴾ the warner﴿

The warner is the calamities which are but Allah’s messages to His creations. Allah says:

﴾And if (We had) not (sent you to the people of Makkah) in case a calamity should seize them for (the deeds) that their hands have sent forth, they should have said: "Our Lord! Why did You not send us﴿

[Al-Qasas, 47]

Allah didn’t say that they ask for a calamity but for:

﴾a Messenger? We should then have followed Your Ayat (Verses of the Qur'an) and should have been among the believers."﴿

[Al-Qasas, 47]

Thus Allah called the calamity a message.
There are different kinds of messages and messages are not only written ones, for example the military parade is an indirect message to the countries in the neighborhood. A gesture could also be a message, therefore you should believe beyond doubt that calamities are messages from Allah to the heedless person, and when he is afflicted in his health, he pays heed.
  Therefore, calamities are the “Natheer”.

7- “Al-Natheer” is bad health:

One more thing, bad health is the “Natheer”.
Allah could have created man young forever till he dies, but Allah’s wisdom decreed that man after 50 starts to have health issues, he starts to have gray hair, weak sight and he starts using glasses and fixing his teeth.
He complains about having a bad back, high uric acid or triglycerides in the blood, and accordingly he will go through rigid diets.
Therefore, health issues are inevitable after a certain age for all people, and they are but gentle messages from Allah saying to man: O my servant, Me and you are about to meet, so are you ready? Meeting your Creator is so close.

8- “Al-Natheer” is the death of relatives:

Dear brother, heedlessness is on one side, and knowing the value of time is on the other side, Allah says:

﴾ And surely, We have created many of the jinns and mankind for Hell. They have hearts wherewith they understand not, they have eyes wherewith they see not, and they have ears wherewith they hear not (the truth). They are like cattle, nay even more astray; those! They are the heedless ones. ﴿

[Al-A’raf, 60]

 Therefore:

﴾ the warner﴿

Is a very delicate issue, and among the:

﴾ the warner﴿

 Is the death of relatives.
The death of relatives is the warner.
After the death of a man who used to be lofty and loved, his relatives fear entering his room which becomes scary to everyone, so what really happened?
Thus, the death of relatives is the warner.

Procrastination is one of the time diseases:

Dear brother, procrastination is one of the gravest time diseases.
Imam Al Hasan Al Basri said: “Beware of postponing, for you are living your day but not your tomorrow, and if you live till tomorrow, make sure that you are the same in your tomorrow as you were in your day, for if you couldn’t have a tomorrow, you will not regret what you postpone today, hence, don’t say tomorrow and don’t say I will.”
A person promised the prophet PBUH to repent tomorrow, so the prophet said to him: “woe to you, isn’t the entire age in tomorrow?

((The Musawwifun (those who postpone matters especially repentance) will be destroyed))

[Mentioned in relic]

A scholar was asked for a piece of advice so he said: “Beware the word “I will” for it is the soldier of Iblis (Satan)” and he said the following lines of poetry:

Let piousness be your supply, for you don’t know
If night comes will you live till the morning?
How many healthy men died without a disease?
And how many sick men were long in the tooth?
How many young men feel secured day and night
And they don’t know that their shrouds are woven

Life’s value comes from good deeds:

Dear brother, man’s real lifetime is the time he spent in offering good deeds only.
It is like two men, one of them started a business and he earned only 500 liras in 10 hours, and another man who started a business and he earned one million liras in one hour, in this case, time becomes meaningless, for the value comes from the money he earned. The same goes for lifetime, for it is not about how long one lives, but it is about how many good deeds one offers, and his lifetime becomes long or short accordingly.
Dear brother, Ibn Ata’ Allah, who is known with his wise quotes said: “It is possible that a long lifetime has little of supplies, and it is possible that a short lifetime has abundance in supplies, and he who is blessed in his lifetime will achieve in a short time what sh3er are unable to achieve in many lifetimes.
Therefore, lifetime draws its value from offering good deeds.
A supplication goes as follows: “Let it not be a blessed day the day I don’t get knowledge through which I draw closer to Allah, and let it not be a blessed day the day I don’t get closer to Allah”.
Man can prolong his lifetime by offering good deeds, for the value of lifetime is drawn from how many good deeds man offers not from how long he lives.
Dear brother, the greatest good deed, which is continuous even after man dies, is mentioned in the following Hadith:

((Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said, "When a man dies, his deeds come to an end, except for three: A continuous charity, knowledge by which people derive benefit, a pious son who prays for him.''))

[Muslim, Abu Dawood, Tirmizi and An-Nasa’I by Abi Hurairah]

While the gravest bad deed which continues after man’s death is establishing night clubs, for all the sins committed in them will be in his record on the Day of Judgment.
Also he, who establishes a good deed and dies, its reward will continue after his death and will be in his record.
Thus, success, dear brother, lies in knowing how to utilize our limited lifetime.
