Lesson 11 – "O you who believe! Bow down, and prostrate yourselves, and worship your Lord and do good that you may be successful"

In the Name of Allah, The Most Gracious, Most Merciful

Dear noble brothers, we are discussing a new lesson of this series about the Ayaat that start with, "O you who believe…", and the Ayah today is the following:

What is ruku' (bowing down)? Ruku' means submitting to Allah the Almighty while obeying all His Commads without any objections, preservations, exceptions or wishes that the Divine Commands would not have been like this. This is how total submission should be, and regarding that, it is said, "Worshipping Allah is the utmost submission and the utmost love.

(O you who believe! Bow down, and prostrate yourselves, and worship your Lord and do good that you may be successful.)

[Al-Hajj, 77]

In other words, Ruku' is the expression of, "O Lord, I submit myself to You, but I am weak without You", and sujood (prostration) is the expression of, "O Lord, help me obey You." Hence, Ruku' is submission to Allah the Almighty, and Sujood is asking help from Him. It was reported, "Let me convey to you the meaning of "La hawla wa la quwwata illa billah" (there is no power and no strength except with Allah), it means that there is no power to avoid disobeying Allah but by His Power, and there is no strength to obey Allah, but by His Strength."

("Unless You turn away their plot from me, I will feel inclined towards them and be one (of those who commit sin and deserve blame or those who do deeds) of the ignorant.")

[Yusuf, 33]

Pay attention to these Ayaat, please:

(…and keep me and my sons away from worshipping idols.)

[Ibrahim, 35]

("O my Lord! Make me one who performs As-Salat (Iqamat-as-Salat), and (also) from my offspring, our Lord! And accept my invocation.)

[Ibrahim, 40]

The utmost purpose of worshipping Allah is to submit to Him and to ask Allah for help while obeying Him.
