Ramadan Lectures 1446 AH – The Most Beautiful Names of Allah–Lesson 21: Az-Zahir (The Manifest)

In the Name of Allah, The Most Gracious, Most Merciful

Dear noble brothers, today we are tackling a new Name of Allah's Most Beautiful Names, and the Name for today is Az-Zahir.
The meanings of Az-Zahir in Arabic: Az-Zahir is an active participle that describes the One Who is Zahir in the sense of being Lofty and Exalted. Additionally, Az-Zuhoor (noun of Zahir) indicates victory and dominance.

﴾ O you who believe! Be you helpers (in the Cause) of Allah as said Iesa (Jesus), son of Maryam (Mary), to Al-Hawareeoon (the disciples): "Who are my helpers (in the Cause) of Allah?" Al-Hawareeeen (the disciples) said: "We are Allah's helpers" (i.e. we will strive in His Cause!). Then a group of the Children of Israel believed and a group disbelieved. So We gave power to those who believed against their enemies, and they became the uppermost. ﴿

[ As-Saff, 14 ]

Also, Az-Zuhoor means clarification, and revealing the hidden thing. Az-Zahr refers to that which cannot be seen. When we want to describe someone who memorizes the Quran by heart, we say, "Yahfaz Quran 'an Zahr Qalb," which means he keeps the Quran by heart. "Mozaharah" means helping others.

﴾ It is only as regards those who fought against you on account of religion, and have driven you out of your homes, and helped to drive you out, that Allah forbids you to befriend them. And whosoever will befriend them, then such are the Zalimoon (wrong-doers those who disobey Allah).  ﴿

[ Al-Mumtahinah, 9 ]

"…And helped…" is the translation of the Arabic verb Zaaharu, which means in the Ayah, the Kuffar helped one another to drive the Muslims out.
These are the meanings of Az-Zuhoor. However, saying that Allah, may His Glory be glorified, is Az-Zahir, means that He Alone possesses Exalted Divine Character, the Upper Hand, Dominance, Superiority, and Exaltedness, indicating the none-existence of any peer or equivalent. Allah is Az-Zahir in all manifestations of perfection, and He reveals His definitive evidence and apparent proofs.

﴾ It is Allah Who has created seven heavens and of the earth the like thereof (i.e. seven). His Command descends between them (heavens and earth), that you may know that Allah has power over all things, and that Allah surrounds (comprehends) all things in (His) Knowledge. ﴿

[ At-Talaq, 12 ]

He surrounds all things in hidden and apparent ways. Allah Exalts above everything.
Az-Zahir is the One Who is known through reasoning by observing the apparent traces of His Actions and Attributes.
