 Assalamu alaikum Warhamatuallah wa barakhtu

 Dearest Scholar Nabulsi

I would be very grateful for your guidance regarding engagement in the proper islamic way, as instructed to us by Allah. My son, Ali a 20 year old university student would like to get engaged.

 1. What is the appropriate Mahr that the bride or the bride's family are entitled to ask for?

 2. In Islam who pays for the wedding?

 3. Can the girl ask that her engagement and wedding dress be paid for by the groom?

Jazzaku Allahu Khrain for benefiting us with your knowledge.

The Answer:

These matters are usually subject to the agreement between the families of the bride and the groom
Usually the family of the bride make the party upon signing the marriage contract and the family of the groom make the wedding party.
Is is common also that the groom pays an amount of money for the bride to buy the dresses she needs.
